The Vintage Wine Myth
A number of non-wine drinkers have been thrown by a common misconception about Vintage Wine. Many think that labeling it Vintage automatically means ‘old’ and high quality, however this does not always ring true. Vintage wines actually indicate the year on the label is the one year of grapes grown and used in the wine.
The confusion may have originated from producers of Port, which is made using grapes from only a single year, which is later analyzed to see which years were particularly good. These are then labeled as a ‘Vintage Port’ which denotes that the particular year or batch was of particularly high quality.
Vintage wines share some of the aspects of Vintage Ports but only a few. Like Port, Vintage wines are made using only the grapes from a particular year, however this does not guarantee that the wine will be of higher quality. The usual practice is for the wine to be released and wine critics to discuss and decide over which wines are of high quality over time.
To add to this, Vintage wines do not actually have to be 100% made from grapes from that year. Wines from Chilie or South Africa only have to have 75% of grapes from the same year to be labeled as Vintage wines. Wines from America, New Zealand, Australia and member states of the European Union require 85% before they allow it to be labeled as Vintage wine.
The regular types of wine, known as simply ‘non-vintage wines’ utilize harvests from two or more years. Some wineries use this method to create wines with consistent tastes and quality.
In the past, vintage wines were prized and did have different qualities and tastes according to the years they were grown, however modern farming techniques and irrigation now lets most wineries grow consistent crops, but the debate over quality still continues to this day.
